OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. 24 GET ILLUMINATED: ROTHKO CHAPEL, THE GALA I t doesn't happen every year. In fact, Tuesday, May 14, marks only the fourth gala for the Rothko Chapel since 1971, when it was first unveiled next to the future Menil campus as a sanctuary for art, activism, and human rights. The gala takes place as the Rothko Chapel undergoes restoration with plans to reopen in early 2020 , while programming continues off-site. Art- world advocates and the civic-minded will line up for Illumination: The Rothko Chapel Gala at The Astorian. Honorees, selected for carrying on the values of late Chapel founders Dominique and John de Menil, are Houston civil rights leader Reverend William Lawson and New York-based art power couple Fairfax Dorn (co-founder of Ballroom Marfa) and husband, Marc Glimcher of Pace Gallery. Chair couples Melanie Lawson and John Guess Jr., Nancy and Erik Littlejohn, and Tatiana and Craig Massey promise a beautiful night with seated dinner from A Fare H ere's a first look at the new La Colombe d ' O r H o t e l & Residences, currently under construction on Montrose Boulevard. The splendid 34-floor tower includes GOLDEN COLUMN 265 residences and 10 penthouses and will connect to the historic 1923 La Colombe d'Or hotel via an art gallery and outdoor plaza. Eighteen new hotel suites will be added to the ground floor of the new tower, and the hotel's rooms will be gently renovated to preserve their original character. Houston's Zimmerman family, the hotel's proprietors for 36 years, has partnered on the venture with global real estate firm Hines. Expect stylish collections for men, women and children … A buzzy boutique hotel is headed to Austin. Opening this summer is Proper Austin, from L.A. designer Kelly Wearstler and her husband, developer Brad Korzen. The 32-story high-rise has 244 hotel rooms, a limited collection of 99 luxury residences and penthouses for sale, a wellness center and spa, two rooftop swimming pools, and three food and beverage destinations created by McGuire Modern Hospitality. Annie Gallay Retail RAP talents are involved, including interior designer Lauren Rottet, Rottet Studio; architect Jorge Munoz, Munoz + Albin Architecture and Planning; general contractor Urban Oaks Builders; and landscape architect Robinson & Company. Tower renderings reveal sleek design aspects, such as a two-story lobby with an abundance of natural light and warm materials. An adjacent living area has a fireplace and live-oak views. Apartment residences include kitchens with Italian cabinetry and quartz countertops, stainless-steel appliances, and wide-planked wood flooring. Residents will have access to some hotel services, including rooftop amenities and pool, a garden restaurant, and an outdoor cigar lounge. A shared amenity deck at level 10 will have pool-side service for hotel guests and apartment residents.
