ART + DECORATION T he late great furniture designer Vladimir Kagan, who died in 2016 at age 88, left behind an extensive legacy of iconic designs extolling his signature organic shapes and fine craftsmanship. Holly Hunt, which purchased the Vladimir Kagan company later that same year, is reissuing seven of his archival furnishings. Some have never been produced before, or have only been seen in vintage publications. New technology from Roberto Contreras (he founded Cosentino North America), Mike Heylmun, and Doug Dillard — pioneers of the quartz surfacing revolution 20 years ago — has resulted in Moderno showroom and training center. Beautiful and durable large-format porcelain slabs go beyond countertops to shower walls, full-height backsplashes, and fireplace surrounds, and the slabs are resistant to heat and UV rays. Nina Magon of Contour Interior Design designed the interiors of the new showroom located in northwest Houston, which also has a Department of Labor- certified training program to educate seasoned installers and new talent in the trade of porcelain fabrication. Not only is porcelain a cost-effective way to mimic the look of marble, exotic stones, wood, and even concrete, but it's also quickly available and able to deliver within seven days. Anne Lee Phillips S hinola, the Detroit-based accessories brand, made headlines last year with the opening of its first hotel, housed within five old structures in downtown Detroit, including the historic Singer building. The brand is the brainchild of Dallas- area businessman Tom Kartsotis (who also founded Fossil) and is best known for its artisan watches and craftsman leather bags made in Detroit. Shinola's latest splash is a collaboration with Waterworks, which custom- designed the bathroom fittings Vladimir Kagan Hindsignt sofa STYLE ON TAP and tiles for Shinola Hotel. Produced under the Waterworks Studio label, the limited-edition industrial-inspired Ludlow Shinola Edition fittings are influenced by Shinola's Runwell watch design, with fittings in two-tone nickel- and- Shinola steel combinations, and includes handsome faucets, lever handles, a robe hook, and a hand shower. Rebecca Sherman A NEW ERA FOR PORCELAIN FROM THE ARCHIVES OF VLADIMIR KAGAN collection made its debut during Miami Art Week in December and includes several lounge chairs, tables, and a credenza. The Hindsight sofa, redeveloped from a limited-production design that Kagan released in the 1960s, hovers just above the floor on a Lucite base, evoking the glamorous Hollywood Regency era of many of his most sensuous designs for clients such as Marilyn Monroe.
