104 76 for which the Eagle crooned. The 1880s cedar-shaked Arts and Crafts inn has just six rooms, each cloaked with William Morris textiles and named for an artist who enjoyed the privilege of the Catskills' quaint seclusion. The amenities perpetuate the feeling of being part of a charmed circle of the natively refined: August Uncommon Tea served in vintage owl mugs, outdoor fireplaces and reading nooks, and meals foraged from surrounding farms. I enjoyed Michelin-rated chef Ryan Tate's seven- course tasting menu set to a playlist of Judee Sill, Junior Kimbrough, and The Roches. The chef equally dazzled each morning with comely spreads of harvested wild ramps and local trout. A perfect hamlet for hibernation, Deer Mountain is well deserving of its high bear activity. deermountaininn.com. bathrooms (Selke hid the commode tanks in the wall during construction — a detail only a designer will appreciate). 33 Main is a glimpse into her creative mind, as much a laboratory for what's next as a snapshot of her early career sewing designs for Country Curtains and Eddie Bauer in her home garage. New England roots are evident in her freshened Early-American staples, such as her Dash & Albert striped rugs, and in her genius collaboration with Mark Sikes, whose blue-and-white additions harken to early imports. The hearth-anchored lounge filled with Scandi-style furniture from Eneby Home (found at Round Top and Brimfield) was home to a chance run- in with my favorite singer songwriter and critics' darling, Tift Merritt, who won me over. But so did the celebratory use of plywood in my minimalist room, stocked with all the creature comforts: linens by Hudson-based Hawkins New York, Ursa Major toiletries, and LED hurricane lamps for hikes on the Mohawk Trail. touristswelcome.com. Deer Mountain Inn, Tannersville, New York Borrowing from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle in 1898, our next stop was a "bark bound paradise." I found hinterland Deer Mountain Inn, nestled between Kaaterskill Falls and Onteora Park, the artist colony and members-only Bohemia of Mark Twain, Candace Wheeler, and Louis Comfort Tiffany The Filomena, West Stockbridge, MA Tourists hotel Tourists hotel, North Adams, MA Plain Goods, Litchfield County, CT Tourists hotel 54
