Fall Design Week at Houston Design District T his month, The Houston Design District's Fall Design Week brings to town authors of two of the year's most beautiful design books. A keynote and book signing with designer Andrea Monath Schumacher kicks off the week at 9:45 am Tuesday, October 11, with a VIP reception followed by a luncheon hosted by James Craig Furnishings Showroom. Schumacher spent her childhood summers in the art studio of her grandmother Elizabeth Monath — an understudy of Fernand Léger and Salvador Dali in 1930s Paris — who taught her the art of living. Combine that with a youth spent traveling and an advanced formal design education, and one sees the lens through which Schumacher, based in Denver, creates imaginative, inviting, and intriguing interiors. Her first monograph, Vibrant Interiors: Living Large at Home (Gibbs Smith), showcases her fearless design sensibility. On Thursday, October 13 at 10:30 am, a keynote presentation with design writer Susanna Salk, host of the popular Youtube video series Quintessence at Home With, will reveal top decorating tips and secrets from the style set, such as textile designer John Robshaw or photographer Pieter Estersohn. Salk's latest book, At Home with Designers and Tastemakers: Creating Beautiful and Personal Interiors (Rizzoli), was published earlier this year. A VIP reception precedes, and a book signing follows. In addition to the keynotes are illuminating design lectures and brand marketing programs from top talents Lauren Rottet, Ken Newberry, Rick Birkinshaw of Kirksey Architects, Veronica Solomon, Sheri Bailey and Maggie Vermillion of Bailey Vermillion Interiors, Megan Hotze of Megan Hotze Editorial, Jonathan Fisher of BrandExtract, Joani Scaff of Paisley House, and Barrett Morgan of PaperBrix. Perhaps the thought of travel inspires you both. There are pet carryalls for that, both water resistant and breathable — your dog will appreciate this — when wanderlust strikes ($2,125 to $2,750). From exquisitely made baskets and blankets to leather collars and leashes, if you're looking for a little pick-me-up for that someone special, you can probably find it in Hermès collection pour les chiens.
