D espite being straight off a plane from London, British designer, New York Times best-selling author and mother of five India Hicks dazzled during her illustrated talk and book signing at OKA's jewel-box store. Dressed in a cream blazer and wide-legged denim, Hicks made one devilishly funny quip after another in the most prim and posh of accents and did not appear one bit the weary traveler. She was delighted that most guests had cocktails in hand as they settled in for the illustrated talk, which featured content from her newest book, An Entertaining Story (Rizzoli), followed by a book signing. "Oh, Houston, we're doing this so right," she laughed. The book, in typical India Hicks fashion, is filled with island-inspired tablescapes (Hicks and her family call Harbour Island home) and tales of growing up with her famous decorator father, David Hicks, and mother, Lady Pamela Mountbatten, as well as her storied grandparents, the Earl and Countess Mountbatten. India Hicks OKA at I t's no wonder Los Angeles-based designer Madeline Stuart has been on an epic quest for the secret to enduring design. Stories of her childhood in Hollywood include dropping her bike at the front door of The Beverly Hills Hotel before ordering breakfast in the Paul Williams-designed coffee shop; memories of her family's Spanish Revival home with its 17th- century fireplace, elaborate parquetry floors, and stained-glass windows; and, of course, begging her father, director Mel Stuart, to adapt her favorite book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for the big screen. Whatever may have seemed of-the-moment during Stuart's youth has proven itself against the test of time and remains perennially chic to this day. She delivered her illustrated talk to a packed crowd inside the dreamy Elegant Additions showroom, offering personal anecdotes, insights, and beautiful imagery from her book, No Place Like Home: Interiors by Madeline Stuart (Rizzoli), which includes projects for clients Nora Ephron, Larry David, Jason Alexander, and Lisa Henson. It also captures her musings on timeless interiors and how looking back in time is often the best way to look forward.
