HISTORY When horological history repeats itself, timepieces with updated mechanisms are the result. It's the best of both worlds. By Caitlin Hsu I n 1904, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont complained to his friend Louis Cartier about the inconvenience of checking a pocket watch while flying a plane. Cartier responded with a creation: one of the first-ever men's wristwatches, the Santos-Dumont. The Santos de Cartier, released in 1978 with rounded angles on the dial, curved horns, and exposed screws, is one of the iconic reinterpretations of this historic timepiece. This variation features skeletonized bridges forming the numerals and sword- shaped hands of polished blue steel. In white gold and diamonds, $253,000, at the Cartier boutique. P atek Philippe's quintessential round wristwatch, the Calatrava, was launched in 1932, inspired by the puristic design of the minimalist Bauhaus principle, where function determines form. Now, it's reimagined in platinum with a rose-gilt opaline dial, smooth beveled bezel, and chocolate alligator band. Price upon request, at deBoulle Diamond & Jewelry. J ean Schlumberger's iconic 1965 Bird on a Rock brooch is brought to life in miniature on Tiffany's Bird on a Rock Legacy watch. On the front is a white mother-of-pearl dial and a three-dimensional diamond-set 18K gold bird. A gemstone is held in place by its claws. On the caseback, a precise aperture inset with a magnifying lens gives wearers a secret look at the reverse side of the gemstone. Here, with a 2.1-carat emerald-cut aquamarine. Price upon request, at the Tiffany & Co. boutique. V an Cleef & Arpels' Lady Arpels Jour Nuit watch, which was introduced in 2008, has been reinvented with two new 33 and 38 mm diameter models. These celestial-inspired timepieces show a diamond-paved moon and stars that perpetually chase the sun on a 24-hour rotating dial. Price upon request, at Van Cleef & Arpels. W hen Christopher Ward originally launched the C1 Bel Canto in 2022, the first series sold out in eight hours. The new C1 Bel Canto Classic builds on that success. Made with Grade 5 titanium, it features a laser- etched guilloché pattern across the platine, high-contrast Roman numerals on the dial ,and a glass box sapphire crystal that accommodates the additional height. From $4,840 to $5,205, at the Christopher Ward boutique. 88
