T h e F r i c k Collection has always b e e n a glamorous jewel box of an uptown museum, yet perhaps one overshadowed by larger institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. That is, until a four-year, $220 million renovation brought a well-needed nip and tuck to the Henry Clay Frick mansion designed by Carrère and Hastings in 1914. Open to the public since 1935 in one of New York's last great Gilded Age mansions, the Frick Collection houses a premier collection of fine and decorative arts. Unveiled earlier this year, the restoration and renovation is the most comprehensive since 1935, allowing 30 percent more gallery space, with a restored Garden Court and second-floor galleries in the Frick family's former private living quarters, now open to the public for the first time. Significantly, the Boucher room has been moved to its original location in the second-floor sitting room of such eye-popping design details as inlaid oak floors, colorful frescos, and squiggly Memphis- style mirrors. The Red Room — its entrance, a former bank lobby— leaves perhaps the strongest impression, with soaring ceilings, a 1931 mosaic mural by Hildreth Meière, and surrealistic lily sculptures cast of ecological resin. This artful enclave for Printemps' stellar collection of stilettos is accompanied by the opulent Red Room Bar, its menu of cocktails and snacks a welcome respite from a day of intense retail therapy. It's one of five eateries helmed by Top Chef finalist Gregory Gourdet (Café Jalu, The Champagne Bar, fine-dining restaurant Maison Passerelle, and raw bar Salon Vert) and is already drawing the coolest crowd in FiDi. Come for the adventurous fashion and interiors, stay for a toast to the city that never stops evolving. us.printemps.com.
