The Educated Eye of Decorator Stephen Sills Interior designer materializes at Greenwood King's The Lobby. Becky Birdwell Stephen Sills PHOEBE SEWARD SITS COLUMN-SIDE WITH PEN AND CAMERA IN HAND. L inda King and Julie Greenwood welcomed New York-based interior decorator Stephen Sills to Greenwood King The Lobby for a signing of his latest book, Stephen Sills: Decoration (Rizzoli). The hefty 288-page tome documents the residential work of the Oklahoma native, who is one of the most celebrated decorators working today. Photographer François Halard captured the exquisitely edited interiors of 16 homes, including Sills' own abode in Bedford, New York — deemed the "chicest house in America" by Karl Lagerfeld in the book's foreword. Sills shared stories of his antiquing escapades in Paris and collaborations with celebrity clients including Tina Turner, while revealing what inspires his thought-provoking style. (Think burlap-treated walls, Anish Kapoor disks, Moroccan-tile floors, Cycladic sculptures, Roy Lichtenstein paintings and a multitude of book-filled shelves). Victoria He also discussed his latest endeavor as the first Jezic-Keller creative director of the historic Apthorp building in Manhattan. The dialog ended with a thundering ovation, and copies of the monograph were quickly seized by the chic audience.
