82 R obert and Cortney Novogratz have a knack for turning derelict properties into stunning spaces. The dashing couple and their seven children have their own reality show on HGTV, Home by Novogratz, and the renovations of their quirky houses — the latest is a rambling, 1920s estate in the Hollywood Hills called "The Castle" — have been chronicled in their books. Their design firm, The Novogratz, has reimagined houses and hotels from New York to New Orleans and Napa Valley, and has even redeveloped entire city blocks from the ground up. Everything the Novogratzes get their hands on becomes a little more hip, artistic, and loads more fun. Their new book, Beachside Bohemian: Easy Living by the Sea (Rizzoli, $55), documents their vacation home in Trancoso, Brazil, which they've made over to stunning effect. Part interior design book, part travel guide, it treats us to a room-by-room tour of the house, succinct design and travel tips, and bits on the charming local shops, restaurants, artisans, and nightlife found in the Quadrado, the central hub. The Novogratzes, who write lovingly and enthusiastically about their seaside village and its people, are clearly smitten. Meet Robert and Cortney Novogratz Friday, November 18, 6 to 8 pm, for cocktails, talk, and book signing at the first Creative Economy Salon at Houston Arts Alliance, Alliance Gallery, 3201 Allen Parkway,Suite 250; event is gratis but reservations are a must at houstonartsalliance.com, 713.527.9330.
