80 IT'S A MARKET, IT'S A PARTY… GREAT FUN NEW AND NEXT IN NEW YORK Anne Lee Phillips takes design notes. Photography Karen Cattan, Sugar Studio. I f you're as design-obsessed as we are, What's New, What's Next design market at New York Design Center is not to be missed. It's a jam- packed after noon of product releases, lectures, meet-and-greets, and evening cocktails held in the more than 80 showrooms at 200 Lex. PaperCity participated for the fi rst time this year, alongside beloved design mags Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Veranda, The New York Times Style Magazine, Galerie, and Traditional Home. We dashed from showroom to showroom for talks by Alexa Hampton, Margaret Russell, Bunny Williams, Thom Filicia, Steven Stolman, Aerin Lauder, Visual Comfort's Gale Singer, PaperCity alum turned wallpaper/fabric designer Ashley Woodson Bailey, Dallas' Emily Summers, and Houston designer and blogger Paloma Contreras. We paid our respects to New York Design Center president/CEO Jim Druckman, who seemed to be everywhere at once. Then we returned to the expansive showroom of The New Traditionalists, with its handsome bar, to cele- brate Texas tradition and design. The charming hosts, The New Trads founders Philip Erdoes and Brady Wilcox, welcomed designers, architects, editors, and industry professionals for Goode Company BBQ, Tito's Handmade Vodka cocktails, and Dulce Vida Tequila margaritas. New Yorkers, as it turns out, are big fans of both Texas barbecue and spirits. Beautiful Lucchese cowboy boots were on display, and guests dropped in cards, hoping to win a pair. Architect Bill Curtis of Houston's Curtis & Windham Architects (Russell Windham was unable to attend) gave a fascinat- ing talk about Southern architecture, and signed copies of the fi rm's book, A Vision of Place: The Work of Curtis & Windham Architects (Texas A&M University Press). We overheard more than a few asking Curtis about real estate prices and inventory in River Oaks, perhaps dreaming of leaving their less-than-capacious apartments behind.
