T he design crowd fell hard for collector Maxime de Laurentis' vintage and archival avant- garde fashion offerings with a fervor that's surprising for such a sophisticated clutch. If not for the inherent politesse of Houstonians, there might have been fisticuffs over the mu- seum-worthy fashion ensembles from Maison Martin Margiela, Jil Sander, and Ann Demeulemeester, to drop a few names. M. Naeve proprietor Margaret Naeve Parker and collaborator Matt Johns have long been fans of de Laurentis, one of France's preeminent dealers of couture and archival fashion whose shop, De Laurentis Antiquities, is tucked away in the Marche Paul Bert; alongside his fashion offerings there, he carries rare fashion books and magazines and 20th-century decorative furniture. "I travel all over the world," he said of his sources. "I have a network of celebrities, people who work in fashion, and editors that guide me." He packed 70 stunning and rare pieces for the trip — "la crème de la crème … an exclusive selection for Houston." As for how he curates the vast world of vintage couture and specialized fashion, de Laurentis said, "I select things that I love. It's not about the brand. When I fall in love, I take it."
