OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. 22 D allas Art Fair, considered the best boutique art fair in North America, has revealed its closely guarded list of 2018 exhibitors. The nearly 100 vetted galleries in the 10th edition of the fair, opening April 12, arrive from across the U.S., joined by dealers from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Excitement swirls around some significant first-time exhibitors, notably New York quartet James Cohan Gallery, home to Texas- based Trenton Doyle Hancock; Jeffrey Deitch protégé Kathy Grayson's The Hole; Paul Kasmin Gallery, exhibiting Ian Davenport, destined for the Dallas Contemporary come September; and the respected Luhring Augustine brand. On the emerging gallery front, watch for Magenta Plains, a New York dealer directed by SMU grad Olivia Smith, who will pair painters across generations, Fair Time, POWER of X O ne of the coveted new addresses of Houston's luxury apartment boom, The Residences at Kirby Collection, has an unexpected amenity: a burgeoning art collection that's every bit the match of the polished interiors by L.A.'s Dianna Wong Architecture + Interior Design. The 25-story oval-shaped high- rise in the Upper Kirby District, designed by California-based architect Richard Keating, and developed by NYC-based Thor Equities has reportedly invested $125 million in the mixed-use office, retail, restaurant, and residential complex. The touchstone is its lobby with a wall-sized bank of windows on the north and west sides. In the biggest news, much-loved Spanish restaurant BCN opens a second concept, called MAD, the airport code for Madrid, scheduled for fall 2018, lead by BCN owner Ignacio Torras and chef Luis Roger … Two Baltimore seafood eateries from Atlas Restaurant Group are dropping anchor at River Oaks District also with a Fall 2018 opening planned. Ouzo Bay and sister whiskey lounge and raw bar Loch Bar will occupy the entire bottom floor of the Equinox building, with indoor and outdoor seating and DJ. It was therefore fitting that the Kirby Collection commission an artist with Houston ties, Shane Tolbert, to create two monumental eight-by-six- foot abstract canvases for the residential tower. The Texas-born Tolbert is represented by McClain Gallery with an upcoming show at the gallery this summer. For the Kirby Collection, he created the acrylic paintings Moon Tower and Athletica. The new paintings, with their chartreuse and plum palette set against a sea of white, have sparked an art conversation among residents.
