61 ART + DECORATION I talian architect Giovanni "Gio" Ponti designed some of the most signifi cant furniture of the 20th century, many created specifi cally for his own stunning homes in Milan. Ponti was a fan of industrial design; his furniture, which he produced from 1923 through the late '50s, was considered democratic and economical, as well as modern and sophisticated. In 2013, Italian furniture maker Molteni&C teamed with Ponti heirs to reissue a selection of tables, rugs, chairs, and casegoods found in Ponti's own homes, along with limited editions he designed for clients. Now, after a long wait, three additional Ponti chairs, reissued between 2015 and 2017, have landed stateside: the D.151.4 easy chair, originally designed for luxury ocean liners and cruise ships between 1949 and 1951; the D.156.3 lounge chair, fi rst produced for the American company Altamira; and the D.154.2 armchair, a 1953 commission for one of Ponti's favorite projects, the Villa Planchart in Caracas. The Ponti collaboration is part of Molteni's ongoing Heritage Collection, which also features classics by Werner Blaser, Yashuhiko Itoh, and Tobia Scarpa.
