OBSESSIONS. DECORATION. SALIENT FACTS. 20 T he new year brings news about a Houston gallery poised to become a prime player in the Texas photographic world: Foto Relevance. PaperCity first covered the art space in our May 2018 issue, singling out co-founders Bryn Larsen and Geoffrey Koslov as bold arrivals on the Houston art scene. Less than two years later, F o t o R e l e v a n c e 's photography program h a s o u t g r o w n i t s original 550-square- foot footprint in a shared MaRS-designed space in Montrose. In January, it moved into 4411 Montrose Gallery Building, a plum piece of contemporary neo-Brutalist architecture designed by UH professor Peter Zweig. The well-connected dealers — both, board members of Houston Center for Photography — occupy a high-profile ground-floor address within the kunsthalle complex. (Their new space was last home to Mexico City-headquartered Guerrero-Projects and needed no major layout or design changes.) Ramping up by five-fold to T hose in search of the fountain of youth are one step closer, with the arrival of Westlake Dermatology to Houston. The beloved Austin dermatology and cosmetic surgery practice has opened on Bissonnet, overlooking leafy Boulevard Oaks. Although the company was founded 17 years ago in Austin, Houston is a homecoming of sorts: Founder Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis; his wife, manager Rosanne Nikolaidis; and her sister, director of marketing Karen Friedman, all grew up in Houston. Austin architect Michael Hsu, who also recently opened a Houston office, designed the building and interiors. Soft edges, sculpted ceilings, and oversized windows allow natural light to sun-soak a palette of plaster, white oak, terrazzo, marble, and leather. Westlake is known for its modern doctors, nurses, and aestheticians who treat conditions from acne to skin cancer; cosmetic procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers, and CoolSculpting carry equal clout. Hot bookings include a chemical peel combined with Genius RF Microneedling, which addresses pigmentation issues, tightness, and texture, and Ultrapulse eyelid tightening, which utilizes ablative laser therapy for blepharoplasty-like results without surgery.
