104 WHAT'S NEW, WHAT'S NEXT IN AMERICA'S ANTIQUES MECCA L ocated in the heart of Round Top, Brenham-based South Texas Tack, opens its second location, STT Round Top, for the ride- or-die set. Owners Nancy and Steve Martin, who founded the equestrian and ranching-goods emporium in Brenham in 2003, jumped at the chance to renovate the charming 1800s building that once served as the town funeral home. Look for a full-service hat bar, along with boots, jeans and accessories. POPI BURGER A rmando and Cinda Palacios have done it again. Their latest Round Top endeavor, Popi Burger, is a runaway hit. "The hardest part of Round Top is having the locals accept you, and the locals have been wild about Popi T extile designer Courtney Barton, who has a Houston shop on Ferndale in Upper Kirby, has changed her business name from Mela & Roam to Courtney Barton after nearly a decade in business — and will open a shop in Round Top early this fall. Barton is known for the soft cotton Dohar blankets and custom hand-block-printed pillows that she designs, which are produced by her loyal team of artisans in Rajasthan. For the past five years, she's had a popular and impeccably styled booth at The Arbors in Round Top; watch for the booth again during the spring show. Then, later this year, her new store will open on the northwest corner of town, next to Richard Schmidt Jewelry and Etienne Market, filled with her East-meets-West heirloom-quality linens and unique furnishings, art, and home accessories. "We've now got Tex-Mex [Mandito's], burgers, and Italian [Lulu's]. But we only did food that was needed here." The building is a 160-year-old beauty that was formerly owned by the Van Mindens and served as a general store. Armando and Cinda left as much patina as they could, and filled the restaurant with antique and vintage furniture. As a result, this four- month-old hamburger joint feels more like 100 years old. The name hails from Armando's 3-year-old granddaughter, who calls him Popi. The beef comes from HeartBrand in nearby Flatonia, which has 100 percent Akaushi cattle. In addition to classic burgers, baked potatoes, chicken-fried steak, Blue Bell milk shakes, and fries, Popi Burger also cooks up Beyond Burgers, the plant- based patty that looks and tastes like beef. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 8 pm, and Sundays 11 am to 3 pm. Popi Burger, 104 N. Washington St., popiburger.com.
