among a thicket of tall trees. The essential character has remained intact inside and out, having escaped the kinds of renovation that can ruin modernist houses. And the original materials — Saltillo tile floors, brick walls — are even more beautiful after 70 years and give the interiors a timeless quality. The tile in particular reminds Cammarano of home. "It's common to have Saltillo tile in Italy," he says. "They don't use as much parquet or wood. The rooms have a bit of Italian influence — I have seen houses in Italy that have similar furniture elements and layout."
