A lways a designer favorite, Patterson Flynn's newest collection of rugs with acclaimed L.A. designer Mary McDonald consists of hand-knotted silk and wool combined in geometric forms and optical and tonal effects, such as patterns from backgammon boards, classical architectural forms, and European hedge mazes. Another McDonald standout collection is abaca-fiber rugs that take inspiration from the patterns found in marble floors of her favorite castles and homes in Europe, as well as Napoleonic star and pinwheel patterns. The formal patterns are translated into casual rugs made from hand-coiled abaca-leaf fibers, a natural material native to the Philippines that's been used since the 19th century and prized for its strength and resistance to water damage. Patterson Flynn is known for preserving antique loom processes and experimenting with modern engineering, with a focus on natural and rarefied fibers such as abaca. An acclaimed couturier with a penchant for dark and sensuous looks, wild prints, and pop culture references, Deacon is also costumer for the New York City Ballet and Lions Gate Films, and an illustrator whose work has appeared in Vogue, The New York Times, and Interview Magazine. His new collection of upholstery fabrics, wallpapers, and velvets for the 164-year-old British textiles house Sanderson blends "eccentricity, decadence, and comfort in equal measure," he says. The collection includes commissioned artworks and new iterations of archival jacquards and prints from his own studio and the Sanderson archive. Classic florals along with Surrealism and medieval and Greek mythological references are woven throughout, as is the worn and fading grandeur of the English manor house. Almost a dozen different designs for wallpapers and fabrics include Pygmalion, a four-panel scenic mural that depicts a tromp l'oeil curtain drawn back to reveal an astonishing world of rococo dolphins, giant artichokes, fennel, garlic bulbs, mollusk shells, strings of pearls, feathers, and stag beetles. Aurelia's Grail wallpaper is made from heavy, embellished jacquard featuring meticulously detailed Tudor beasts — unicorns, yales, capuchins, pygmy parrots, and Japanese Chin dogs, all entwined with English roses and vines. Deacon plays on the classic Sanderson stripe with Regency Aperigon, a celebration of the ancient sartorial pattern that's updated with a subtle sawtooth edge.
