D esigners have long relied on Perennials for durable and beautiful luxury performance fabrics and rugs. Now they can turn to Ann and David Sutherland's quarter-century-old brand for Perennials wallcoverings, too, with a debut collection of 18 designs. The first release includes metallics, patterns and murals, textures, and performance vinyls, all durable and low maintenance, with many also washable and fade-resistant, making them ideal for high-traffic areas such as bathrooms, living spaces, and dining rooms. The aptly named Go to Stripe takes the classic cabana stripe off the chaise and onto a wallpaper. Metallics are of vivid handwoven raffia in Diva, a natural cork bark in Corked, and serve as the ground over a natural grass cloth in Good Natured. Anne Lee Phillips Home Decor E n route to London's Columbia Road Flower Market one Sunday, I caught a glimpse from the speeding bus of a home design shop stocked with what appeared to be nothing but a riot of vibrant stripes. I retraced the route later that day to Colours of Arley — which, for stripes- mad me, was like a sugar fiend falling into Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. The shop, opened by young entrepreneur Louisa Tratalos in July 2023, offers bespoke fabric in four stripe widths (skinny, midi, grand, and jumbo) in any combination conjured from a wall of 180 delectable color swatches. One could pair a foggy- morning combo such as Mouse and Seal for a serene library; an electrifying marriage of Lacquer and Satsuma for a jewel-box Different Stripe powder room; Periwinkle and Mist for a romantic guest retreat; or crisply nautical Classic Indigo and Cream Soda jumbo stripes for classic awnings. A math whiz could figure the accurate number of possible combinations, but for us, let's just say the possibilities are nearly endless. The fabrics include a versatile recycled linen-look texture perfect for curtains and blinds, a thicker recycled weave for upholstery, and a rich recycled velvet — all made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles. There is also a natural cotton-linen fabric. New this year are diagonal stripes, wiggle stripes, a checkerboard option, striped wallpapers, and fabric suitable for outdoor use. In addition to straight yardage for custom projects, Colours of Arley fabricates pillows, lampshades, tablecloths, window treatments, shower curtains, and the adorable dog beds that caught this writer's eye from the window of a London bus.
