His w o r k s a r e among the most whimsical and c o l l e c t e d i n Tiffany & Co.'s glittering archive of precious gems. And while the late great Jean Schlumberger's original bird on a rock, inspired by his friend Bunny Mellon and debuted in 1965, will always be among the most beloved, the jewelry house's new flock have taken flight — and they are as magnificent and regal as the originals. The new Bird on a Rock collection, recently envisioned and reissued by chief artistic officer Nathalie Verdeille, takes flight from the original brooches — those weighty, single-stone brooches topped with an intricate, diamond- encrusted bird. The new collection expands on that, focusing on texture, movement, anatomy, and geometry of a bird's feather. A modern update comes in the form of an intricately modeled cockatoo perched atop a 24-carat oval cabochon turquoise. Flight, meet fancy. W earing a piece by JAR is perhaps the most identifiable way to declare that you exist within the rarest-air levels. The Paris maison of revered American jeweler Joel Arthur Rosenthal famously creates no more than 100 pieces per year and is known for craftsmanship that harkens back to 18 th and 19th century jewels. Collectible doesn't quite do JAR justice: Rosenthal was the first living jewelry designer to be given a retrospective at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2013, and when vintage pieces come up for auction, they fetch six-figure price tags. This month, a pair of circa-1987 earrings with diamond-paved branches, and three 1991-era paved flower brooches headline Sotheby's sale. In the shape of a wild rose, each brooch has a natural pearl center and painterly paved leaves in colored sapphires. Consider a trio of JAR fleurs fastened to your lapel for the holidays. Through Sotheby's A Legacy of Elegance sale in New York City on December 8. Jean Schlumberger Bird on a Rock for Tiffany & Co. JAR at Sotheby's JAR clip brooch with natural pearl, citrines and yellow sapphires, France, circa 1991, through Sotheby's. Tiffany & Co. Bird on a Rock brooch in platinum and gold with turquoise and diamonds. Laura Gonzalez for Schumacher Pipe Illusion Blue and Papaya. 47
