Any advice for aspiring young talent today? MR: I make a point of not giving advice, because I feel like everybody has to discover things for themselves. My mom was a stay-at-home mom, but she was very artistic, and my father is a musician. There was always a premium on art. In some families, the arts are second fiddle to other things, but it was never like that in our house. It was always like, no, this is really important for your soul — and you can make a living with this, too. What haven't you been asked about Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink? MR: It's been examined from every angle. You know how memories, scientifically, are supposed to change depending on how often you talk about them? Sometimes I'm like, "God, what did happen?" What were your favorite films growing up? MR: My coming of age was really experienced more through books. I was a huge J.D. Salinger fan; I Molly R ingwald loved Catcher in the Rye; I really feel like those books spoke to me in the same way that my movies spoke to other people … I would say that the closest thing I had to experiencing movies like other people was [when] I showed Pretty in Pink to my daughter. I had planned to show it to her when she was older, but kids are growing up so much faster, and she was dealing with all of these issues with girls and cliques. She was just nine when I showed it to her. I really wanted to watch something with her that deals with a female protagonist that's strong and a little bit different and sort of an outlier, and how she navigates. I'm thinking in my head, 'What should I show her?' And it was like a light bulb going off: Oh, I made that movie! I can show her my movie! And it was really cool to just sit there with her and watch her… She absolutely loved it, and she just laughed. She completely forgot that it was me. ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO 1 whipped up by the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. We're taken with the historical aspect of "Feast," which begins in the 1930s and moves forward, but above all, the performances, which include a gingerbread surprise staged by Nigerian-born, London-based Mary Evans that probes the history of slavery via food. Other gastronomic high points include the enactment of Tom Marioni's salon The Act of Drinking Beer with Friends is the Highest Form of Art (1970-present), complete with guest bartenders at the Blaffer throughout the run of the exhibition and the performance of Lee Mingwei's tasty participatory The Dining Project. There's even a roving video filmed by Houston-based Gabriel Martinez, with the artist and guests mapping Houston's most delish taquerias. Later in the season, the culinary and canvases collide at the Art Institute of Chicago, when "Art and Appetite" stirs up a look at the rendering of glorious food and dinner parties throughout the history of American art, from Raphaelle Peale and Gerald Murphy through Wayne Thiebaud, plus a special PA by the Holy Grail of American paintings, Nighthawks by Edward Hopper (November 12 – January 27, 2014). blafferartmuseum.org; artic.edu. Anspon LOIS GREENFIELD [ RAP James Turrrell's Aten Reign, 2013, Guggenheim New York I'll be reading: Texas talent Jane Eifler, best known as a painter, steps out to play with collage for this month's PC Acquire. Her second-generation images are seamlessly applied to PVC substrate, each one unique and culled from a curated collection of beauty and fashion ads clipped from magazines (PaperCity is a fave), posh catalogs and other ephemera. Eifler is a master of the minimal, leaving space and air to float and swirl around her torn pages. Shown last fall in both a solo at Lawndale Art Center and in McClain Gallery's painting survey curated by Aaron Parazette, she opens this month at longtime dealer McMurtrey Gallery in a group view Jane Eifler's Shopper, 2013 about the art of collage. Eifler is poised at this juncture— after a stint at Vogue magazine where she began her career, a distinguished 20-year period teaching art at St. John's and a return to college for her MFA — with important things to say about the language of abstraction and the primacy and beauty of our image-saturated media.
