I Holly Moore see harbingers of fall! They're certainly not golden leaves — instead, they're the reams of paper (yes, paper) that comprise my dreaded To Do list, rolling out of the printer and chronicling midAugust until Christmas break … a sea of deadlines and dates. In all the miasma of getting kids ready to go back to school, booking business trips and holidays on the one godforsaken airline left, to doing the tiniest bit of maintenance pour moi, there are a handful of lifesavers I depend on. I reveal them to you: (1) Standing appointments for a thrice-weekly shampoo and blow dry with Ceron. (2) Tutoring time at General Academic Study Lounge to alleviate all homework, test and finals stress. (3) A cook to come into my kitchen to make three dinners in one visit. (4) Manicures/ pedicures desk-side; try the new Shellac polish that lasts weeks. (5) A car jockey to pick up my car, wash it, fill it with gas and return it in just 1.5 hours. We need all the extra bits of time for the packed September Social Calendar (beginning on page 73). Pull the section and keep it on your desk. Top events this month I definitely won't miss: (1) PaperCity showing of Mademoiselle C, the documentary film of style arbiter Carine Roitfeld. (2) Symphony Centennial Opening Night Gala With Renee Fleming, sigh, Saturday, September 7 (3) Houston Fine Art Fair Opening Night, September 19; be sure you have the Black Card to enter the pre-pre-party. (4) J. McLaughlin Opening Party benefitting Bo's Place, September 25 — bust out the lobster-print pants. (5) Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Opening Party benefitting Dec My Room, September 26, with Mexico City DJs Tom & Collins. And there you go. Another list. Holly Moore, Editor in chief holly@papercitymag.com SEPTEMBER 2013 | STYLE | FASHION | SOCIAL S adness sets in … summer is over. No more sleeping late and working from home just to hang out with the kids. My contrasting travels have been completed, finishing in Eastern Europe after West Texas. Who can't love the pace over there: Tour a medieval castle or two and finish the day with four pints of lager; sixhour walking tour of Prague — four pints of lager; day tour of Auschwitz — tears, reflection, six pints of lager. I actually stayed several days in the town of Ceske Budejovice (aka: Budweis) in the Czech Republic, where the original Budweiser was formulated in the 13th century. (I went to visit friends who live there, not to make a beer pilgrimage, I promise!) Here at the magazine, we've been going through a series of inward-looking exercises over the summer. The intent has been to highly define our DNA, uncommon offering and our passionate community of readers. This will be Jim Kastleman with Olivia and Ben in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic instructive to both the editorial and ad departments in fulfilling their missions. Over the next couple of months, our readers, clients and friends may be asked for input — which we sincerely value and appreciate. One sneak glimpse into our findings so far reveals the definition of our core reader: a curious, involved male or female who seeks out stylish, sophisticated and aspirational experiences that enrich the quality of his or her life in a local context. Yep, that's you. Enjoy the huge September issue. Before her time at Vogue, this global style influencer and creator was stylist and muse to creative director Tom Ford at Gucci in the 1990s; Ford makes a PA in the film, as does Karl Lagerfeld (watch for his scene-stealing moment with the baby carriage), Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexander Wang, Jay-Z, Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier and Diane von Furstenberg. Directed by famed fashion documentarian Fabien Constant, who's well-known to fashion insiders from his other cinematic releases including The Day Before (behind the scenes at Fashion Week), Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton and The Vogue Fashion Night Out. Mademoiselle C is revelatory, exposing both professional and personal sides of the fabled fashion arbiter, one of the two most influential fashion editors in the world (the other being Anna, of course.) Roitfeld says, "Seeing myself on-screen for the first time was like walking naked down the Champs-Élysées." For our exclusive Q&A with director Constant, visit papercitymag.com. Watch for a Sarah Jessica Parker, Karl PaperCity-hosted Houston showing. With a dip into the company's vault, the famed, classic Collier de Chien, Kelly Double Tour and Chaîne d'Ancre bracelets are combined and reimagined in rose gold or white gold with diamonds. They might just be better together than they were alone. From $37,900, at Hermès. SEPTEMBER | PAGE 4 | 2013 THE NEW HAMILTON SHIRT C ountry crooner Lyle Lovett has traded in his pick for a pencil, creating a new collection of shirts with Hamilton. A bespoke client of this tony shirt maker for many years, Lovett forged a close relationship with siblings Kelly and David Hamilton, and the collaboration that ensued is comprised of 23 shirts made to Lovett's specifications. Curved yokes and matching pocket flaps, horn buttons and barrel cuffs — the collection has a distinctly western aesthetic, but the slightly trimmer fit belies the designer's well-known style sensitivity. Hand-cut in the company's Houston factory, fabrics range from poplins to twills. From $225, at Hamilton Shirts; hamiltonshirts.com. Seth Vaughan
