Bun B's Symphonic Rap-sody On November 14, local hip-hop legend UGK's Benard "Bun B" Freeman will perform on the Jones Hall stage with the Houston Symphony in an epic collaboration in conjunction with the Anti Defamation League's Houston In Concert Against Hate. Never before in the Symphony's history has the orchestra collaborated with a hiphop artist; it calls to mind Jay-Z's fierce performance last year at Carnegie Hall, where the New Yorker stated during the show, "We're gonna step on all the lines that separate all types of music. We have this beautiful orchestra here … hip-hop, jazz … all those lines that divide us, we're gonna step on 'em." If anyone in Houston can break those barriers and cross those lines, it's Bun, who has crafted original lyrics for the show in tribute to four prominent Houston education and civil-rights figures: Esther Campos, former director of the HHEC community development corporation; Michael Feinberg, founder of educational nonprofit KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program); longtime TSU professor and debate coach Thomas Freeman; and Carol Shattuck, president and CEO of Collaborative for Children, another nonprofit that assists earlychildhood development.
