The Museum established the Guardian of the Human Spirit award in 1997 as a platform for acknowledging dedicated Houstonians who have worked to enhance the lives of others and to better humankind. "I am very excited about our honorees — we call them the 'Master Builders of Our Community,'" said Museum Chair Mark Mucasey in announcing this year's recipients. "Bill Morgan and Murry A Holocaust survivor who survived the German invasion of Poland in World War II, William J. "Bill" Morgan came to the United States in 1949. He settled in Houston in the early 1950s and established himself in business, working first in the wholesale meat industry and later founded a new real estate company called Globe Construction along with a property management subsidiary, Globe Management, which later became The Morgan Group Inc. The business thrived and over the years expanded into the multi-million dollar real estate and construction company that has contributed much to improve life in the Houston community today. Morgan was an active participant in the planning and development of Holocaust Museum Houston, beginning with its early stages in 1989. He served as the original construction manager and as the Museum's chairman from 1996 to 1998 and continues to serve on the Museum's Board of Advisors. Bowden are currently some of the best and most prolific multi-family builders in Houston. And, of course, Bill helped build something very special to us — our Museum — and has continued to support it every year with improvements as we need. Sharing the stage with one of our founding survivors will be Murry Bowden, someone who was so affected by Bill's story and our work at the Museum that he decided to take a leadership role in our mission."
