BY JANE ROZELLE. PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANA DRIENSKY Crystal Charity Ball's Magnificent New York State of Mind Tiffany treats She did It Her Way T he Icemaggedon wrapped its polar wrath on Dallas the weekend of Crystal Charity Ball, and there was concern that this year's event would be canceled — but absolutely not! The crème of fund-raising fêtes wouldn't dare be called off, so I donned a winter coat and braved the arctic blast, along with 1,600 warmly dressed guests because, as they say on Broadway, the show must go on. The room was simply aglow as I stepped off the red carpet and onto the streets of New York. The wonderful wizard of Dallas, ball designer Tom Addis, and his hive of busy bees transformed the Hilton Anatole overnight into a Manhattan skyline. The lobby morphed into Times Square, with advertising billboards from major shows, yellow cabs in every direction and entertainers cruising the foyer. Chairman Caren Kline, a native New Yorker, shared, "I selected the theme of 'Magnificent Manhattan' because it had never been done in Crystal Charity's 61-year history." And magnificent it was, from the live statues to the silent auction boasting exotic getaways across the globe, beautiful baubles including a mesmerizing sapphire-and-diamond necklace from The Diamond Doctor and autographed jerseys from Dallas' sports superheroes, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford and Clayton Kershaw of the L.A. Dodgers. Not to mention, the delicious sustenance provided in the lobby as far as the eye could see — Serendipity's Frozen Hot Chocolate, anyone? Once cocktail hour came to a close, the ballroom doors opened, and partygoers gasped: The room dazzled with crystal chandeliers and more than 1,000 candles — a magical sight. Swanky surf-and-turf Maine lobster and New York strip were on the menu, followed by dancing to the jive sounds of the James Davis Orchestra and Starlight Orchestra. With a glass of bubbly in hand, I explored the streets of Manhattan, watching for my favorite frocks. Caren Kline, who sparkled in Marchesa, confided that her best-dressed list included the custom-made Lisa Perry yellow-taxi dress worn by the lovely Regen Fearon, Dale Pinto's custom-made Jackie Rogers black dress with white ruffles, the Monique Lhuillier dress worn by Pam Perella, and Francie Moody-Dahlberg's magnificent Zuhair Murad. The most glamorous accessories by far were the Sue Gragg Russian Doll earrings worn by Nasiba Adilova. Other sparkling jewels of the evening: Betsy Eiseman, Elaine Agather, Barbara Daseke, Katherine Coker, Michelle Lockhart, Linda Secrest, and Aileen Pratt. As the wining, dining and dancing abated, I knew it was time to put away my glass slippers. I grabbed a goodie bag of NY bagels on the way out, thanks to Cindi's NY Deli, and hopped in my carriage home.
