T his month's Design + Art section continues a longstanding PaperCity tradition of tapping a notable talent to craft an artwork for our cover. Mighty figures from William Wegman to the Art Guys (twice) have furnished works for our pages, while the late great Bert Long Jr. even carved via chainsaw one of his signature, multi-ton colored ice installations just for us. Drumroll for April: If you don't recognize the hand of Aaron Parazette in the text creation on this section's cover, you haven't been paying attention to the Texas art scene. Parazette — former Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Core Fellow, current University of Houston professor and assistant director of the UH School of Art and 2012 Art League Houston "Texas Artist of the Year" — employed the phrase that says it all: "Buy Art Now." His marriage of geo-colored abstraction with smart text play is perfectly realized in Heat Sweet, 2014. Save this cover for your collection; it's offered in a run of 80,000 (that's PaperCity's circulation). Or, wait for the smaller edition, coming soon in a special collaborative project between PaperCity and Parazette. Meanwhile, if you're over at the newly revamped UH University Center, check out this painter's epic (and we do mean epic), Remembering Last Summer, which, at 77 by 10 feet, must be the biggest mural in Texas. (Its pendant piece, Free Dive, is arriving in about a year.) Hankering for a painting by this Texas master? Head to his long-time Houston dealer, McClain Gallery. Catherine D.
