Laurann Claridge R evelatory" might not be sufficiently exclamatory for my reaction to seeing the work of Álvaro González for the first time. Design director at Italian leather- goods company Valextra, González launched a namesake line of sandals and belts last spring, with his men's items immediately picked up by Mr. Porter, among others including Paris' Colette. His work exemplifies the sophistication of an industry insider — which he unquestionably is, with stints at Valentino, Jimmy Choo, Tod's, Loewe and Loro Piana. His men's spring collection includes four sandal styles in simple vegetal tanned calf and alligator (with a galvanized brass buckle integrated into two styles) and belts executed in an identical manner. From $395, at mrporter. com … Zing went my heartstrings when I discovered the witty work of lifelong friends turned business partners Alexis Zambrano and Jesus Torres, who hail from Monterrey but now live and work in NYC. After reconnecting at school in the city, they realized neither could find the unique accessories they sought, so they opted to make their own. After apprenticing under a New York jeweler, they founded M. de Pochas — a name inspired by the macabre fin de siècle masterpiece of dandy Frenchman Jena Lorrain. Almost more exciting than their imaginative cuff links — what's not to love about an enamel iris on one's wrist? — are their stickpins; designs include diamond- studded enamel pansies, splayed banana peels, and sunny-side-up eggs in a sterling- silver skillet. They also do exquisite stud sets, ladies' jewelry and custom commissions. From $250, at mdepochas.com … You've been asked to a gala but don't own a tux? Seth Vaughan Raffish Rake Restaurant Buzz Song & Dance with Bette Midler Our town is fertile ground for bold art schemes and dreams that actually work and take hold. Witness this spring's FotoFest. Now a new initiative is taking off. Although more concise than the photographic biennial in terms of days, CounterCurrent 14 boasts big ideas and a utopian viewpoint, poses questions and, above all, posits a new way to understand our ephemeral city. Spanning five days with nearly 15 performances/experiences, the festival embraces the disciplines of dance, theater, visual art, music, film, architecture, design and literature. The concept is produced by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts, where innovative director Karen Farber continually pushes the envelope. But after meeting some of the participants of the inaugural CounterCurrent, this scribe was beyond impressed with the possibilities and sense of participation afforded the audience. Here are some of our must-sees: Miwa Matreyek's hypnotic melding of projected animations, shadow dancing and cinematic film and video; University of Houston's Art and Architecture Departments' Re/Cycle Hub, wherein mobile, shade-making pedal-powered bikes emit an inspiring environmental statement; Suzanne Bocanegra's performance with a weaver, accordion player and 50 amateur violinists who receive music lessons only an hour before they strum their chords; the pairing of Seattle composer Byron Au Yong and video artist/ collaborator Susie J. Lee in Piano Concerto-Houston; and, our personal favorite, Lacy Johnson and Josh Okun's story-telling ode to Houston's off-the-radar places and under- known neighborhoods, in The Invisible City.
