TIME STANDS STILL The Cadenas timepiece from Van Cleef & Arpels — re-released this month in four variations — is said to have been inspired by the Duchess of Windsor, in 1935. At that time it was considered gauche for women to wear watches, so it was designed as a bracelet, with a dial that can only be seen by the wearer. SPIRIT ANIMAL Cartier's first panther appeared on a watch. Or more precisely, in a 1914 ad (one of their first), and then on a watch. But the panther was made famous by Jeanne Toissant, Louis Cartier's muse and later director of fine jewelry. A progressive, confident and arguably untamable woman of her time, she gave life to the feline and unmistakably feminine mascot — so much so that she eventually adopted it as her own nickname and became known as La Panthère. Her influence was significant, and many of Cartier's most famous clients came to them through Jeanne, including the Duchess of Windsor, also known as Wallis Simpson, whose third husband, Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, commissioned a panther brooch in her honor. Panthère de Cartier necklace in 18K white gold with emeralds, onyx and diamonds. Price upon request, by appointment only; information 800.227.8437.
