C oncept king Lee Ellis — who helms F.E.E.D. TX hospitality group (Liberty Kitchen, BRC, Petite Sweets) — is going wing to wing with the Colonel. His cool new eponymous eatery, Lee's Fried Chicken and Donuts, challenges anyone who thinks they know something about frying chickens to savor what it takes his team three days to prepare. The Heights-area concept begins with Stringer Mountain Farms chickadees, which are raised vegetarian without antibiotics or growth hormones. The bird is brined for 24 hours before a buttermilk bath; only on the third day is it ready to be dropped into the fryer. Like the fast-food giants, Lee's offers fried chicken meals ($5 to $27) for eat-in or take-out, as well as à la carte options. Your first stop should be the sauce bar, where for 30 cents you can dress your drumstick with a swipe of bacon jam, creole honey mustard, Crystal hot sauce mayo (my fave), hot sauce syrup or Dreamland-style barbecue sauce. Go-withs include a creamy potato salad with Southern-style mustard-mayo dressing, sour cream mashed potatoes with bacon jalapeño cream gravy and seasonal fresh creamed corn ($3 each). Prefer your chicken on a challah bun? Lee's has three sandwich options ($7 each), plus a pulled chicken chopped kale salad ($9) for the health-minded. But let's not forget the donuts ($1.25 to $2 each). Lee's are kitschy fun — some slathered in birthday cake icing, rich Mexican chocolate or praline bacon and caramel. The sweet treats are served from 7 am till they run out. And, trust us, they will all run out long before the doors close every evening. The talk coincides with the release of Mark Rothko: From the Inside Out, hot off the Yale University Press ($35). Hear Rothko and Tinterow weigh in on one of the giants of the American century, on the occasion of the magnificent Rothko retrospective at the MFAH (through January 24). MAX BURKHALTER FRYING with Lee Lee Ellis The classic leather jacket, a perpetual fall staple, is reimagined this season courtesy of super-cool British rocker chick Georgia May Jagger. Inspired by her own assemblage of outerwear, the model and gene-pool winner (she's Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall's daughter) has collaborated with Mulberry on a soft black lambskin number with dual zip pockets and a sexy vintage style, hitting at the hips for a cooler cut and with roomier arms for layering. The lining is unexpected jewel-toned — emerald green, sapphire blue and ruby magenta. Rounding out Jagger's collection are a silk bandana; cotton stole emblazoned with a bee, owl or fox; and a chic buffalo leather biker pouch — toss it over your shoulder or wear it cross-body. $150 to 1,590, at mulberry.com. Anne Lee Phillips Georgia May Jagger JENNY ANTILL CLIFTON JENNY ANTILL CLIFTON D esign historian and biographer author Caroline Seebohm's new and inspiring book Rescuing Eden: Preserving America's Historic Gardens (The Monacelli Press, $50) is a heroic look at 30 preserved gardens throughout the U.S., including Peckerwood Garden near Houston. The gardens represented in the book were selected for the drama of their original creation and rescue, as well as for their historical and horticultural importance. They include Alcatraz; Charleston; Saint- Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, New Hampshire; and the Untermeyer Garden in Yonkers, New York. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) and Peckerwood Garden Foundation bring Seebohm to Houston Thursday, November 5, for an illustrated talk about her new book at Canopy restaurant, 3939 Montrose Boulevard, 6 pm cocktails, 7 pm presentation and book signing.
