84 HOUSTON PAPERCITY DESIGN AWARDS (continued from page 82) 2018 RESILIENCY AWARD FIRM: Arena Design FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR: Rusty Arena PaperCity Design Awards salutes the idea of talent — and fortitude. The 2018 Resiliency Award goes to Arena Design, Rusty Arena founder. A rena Design celebrates 30 years as one of America's acclaimed artisanal design houses practicing the lost art of hand-screened wallpapers and fabrics. As Arena Design headed into the height of its fall production last August, Hurricane Harvey devastated the 20,000-square-foot warehouse along Halls Bayou — work tables, inventory, fabrics, paints, shipping department, artwork, many of the archives, as well as offices and kitchen. Fortunately, Rusty Arena and his team were able to salvage many of the precious screens, and Arena Design had the resilience and nimbleness to seek assistance — setting up a GoFundMe page, securing grants and financial relief from the Texas Association of Manufacturers, the BeeHiveFund, and a Gottlieb Emergency Grant — and putting in countless hours of challenging physical labor.Within two months, Arena Design was back and running. Three massive screen-print tables were rebuilt, fulfilling orders for Texas and national clients, including Restoration Hardware. Congratulations, Rusty Arena, on your Resilience! 2018 GREATER GOOD AWARD PROJECT: Levy Park LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: OJB Landscape Architecture: Jim Burnett, Chip Trageser, Scott Blons ARCHITECTS OF LEVY PARK PERFORMANCE PAVILION AND OVERLOOK: Natalye Appel + Associates Architects: Natalye Appel, Stephanie Millet, Danny Samuels, Megan Sheffy, Donna Kacmar, Claire O'Connor FOUNDATION: Upper Kirby District Foundation: Maureen Sanders, board chairman T here are projects that stand alone in their scope, brilliant design, and service to Houston. We have created the Greater Good Award to honor an individual, foundation, or company that has made a difference and galvanized the Houston community. The $15 million epic re-imaging of a historic city park — long neglected — took Levy Park from a forgotten green space to a vital oasis in the heart of the Upper Kirby District, enjoyed by thousands of urban dwellers since its opening in February 2017. Today, the revitalized and transformed 5.9 acres off Richmond Avenue feature a performance pavilion, dog park, games area, interactive water features, children's garden, rock- climbing wall, and an ADA-accessible tree house. There's also a big bow to sustainability and community, capped by a rain garden and community garden, which harvest and reuse storm water and provide important horticultural lessons.
