88 TEXAS DESIGN WEEK HOUSTON Anne Lee Phillips recaps, with additional reporting by Catherine D. Anspon. Photography Jenny Antill Clifton, Daniel Ortiz, Jacob Power, Hannah Swiggard. T exas Design Week Houston was one for the books. Twenty-five hours of program- ming. Fourteen events spanning six days. Countless hors d'oeuvres, glasses of wine, and cocktails. TXDW Houston — the new- est member of the design symposium circuit (Legends, High Point, Southern Style Now) created by PaperCity editor Holly Moore and Alton LaDay of Alton LaDay Media — showed serious staying power, with a marquee list of celebrated designers and authors for its inspiring schedule of talks, book signings, salons, and cocktail parties, all held in Houston in April. Mark the dates for the next iteration: March 25 through 29, 2019. OPENING NIGHT TXDW kicked off with a fête at Tina and Dan Silvestri's grand home designed by Houston design firm Laura U. Silvestri, along with partner Jamie Graney, launched their new collection of wall coverings, Olivia + Poppy. Seen: Gen and Benjamin Sohr with Pencil & Paper, speaking the next day; Ruth Davis; Lauren Hudson; Minnette Jackson; Minnette Boesel; Barbara Davis; Christy Karll McWhorter; Gigi Huang; Laura Umansky; and Courtnay Tartt Elias and husband Mark. DAY ONE At the crack of 10 am, The Shade Store provided much-needed caffeine and sustenance after the previous night's festivities, serving up the brew in its showroom in Decorative Center Houston. The Shade Store's Loree Colon and Patrick Roswell did the welcoming, before guests headed to David Sutherland showroom for the first keynote. Dapper and erudite Ray Booth of McAlpine discussed his work and signed copies of his new book, Ray Booth: Evocative Interiors (Rizzoli). On discussing a Texas project: "Big is good, but sometimes you need to play up the smaller notes."
