10 letter editor HUNT SLONEM A s we go to press with the April issue, we are gearing up for the most hectic and exhilarating week at PaperCity, the PaperCity Design Awards and Texas Design Week Houston, March 25 – 29. By the time you read this, Farrell Lawo, Meghan West, and I will be in puddles under our desks. For the Awards, we had almost 300 entries from some of Houston's top designers and architects, as well as entries from new and young talent. Entries were judged by Bunny Williams, Tom Scheerer, Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson of Drake/Anderson, and architect Lee Ledbetter. One of my favorite parts of the awards process is the comments from the judges — insightful and thoughtful, and some very witty. Here are a few — can you guess if this was your project. Lee Ledbetter: "I love this house. All the decisions are spot on. Please make another one for me." Bunny Williams: "Love the windows; beautiful, subtle carpet; and great bed; good scale with the tall ceilings." Tom Scheerer: "Great color combo, although I'm not 100 percent sold on the rug." Jamie Drake: "Fun, spirited, fresh. The husband must have jumped for joy that he was pushed beyond his comfort zone." Lee Ledbetter: "Lovely project that highlights/remains true to the way the building was constructed. It's quite difficult to do a very small project so well." Tom Scheerer: "In the spirit of the traditional and chic New York style of decorating by the masters." Lee Ledbetter: "I admire this project. The solution reminds me of the original Brasserie at Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building in NY, where it's all about arrival." Caleb Anderson: "A curious and elevated sense of styles, periods, and textures that brings the client's affinity for art to the fore." Jamie Drake: "Elegant simplicity echoing the voices of Bertoia and Calatrava." Bunny Williams: "Interesting use of the bookshelves, and love the range and hood." Tom Scheerer: "Uncharacteristically spartan for this milieu. I like it." Caleb Anderson: "A powerful interior with so many big design moments." Lee Ledbetter: "There is a lot to like about this house. An inventive compaction of a lot of program on a small site with clever methods of grabbing light." Bunny Williams: "Beautiful use of finishes and great natural elements, such as the beams in the kitchen." Caleb Anderson: I love this pool bathroom; it's fanciful, layered, and the blue sink is absolutely charming!" Holly Moore Editor in Chief holly@papercitymag.com
