TK I n Near & Far (Vendome Press), textile designer Lisa Fine takes us through exotically decorated homes that inspire her, from India's Mughal palaces to Svindersvik, an 18th-century rococo manor house in Sweden. We step inside the residences of many of Fine's closest and most stylish friends, including the rustic Portuguese getaway of fellow textile designer Carolina Irving, the idyllic Welsh country house and garden of London designer Penny Morrison, and the whitewashed Patmos retreat of interior designer John Stefanidis. Most fascinatingly, we glimpse inside the New York apartment of Lee Radziwill, who died this past February. Fine forged a lasting friendship decades ago with the former princess — and sister of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis — after being introduced by a mutual friend in Paris. They had a lot in common: Radziwill, who had famously gone to India in 1962 with her sister, also loved interior decorating. "We had lunch or dinner once a week, usually at Le Voltaire or the bistro Ferdi," Fine recalls. "We gossiped a lot." In New York, Fine often went to Radziwill's apartment for lunch, where Radziwell set up a card table in front of the fireplace draped in a vintage Yves Saint Laurent scarf. While Renzo Mongiardino had done up her London apartment and Christian Liaigre had helped her with her place in Paris, Radziwill decorated the New York apartment herself. She filled it with smart books and objects gathered during a lifetime of travels — carved ivory pigs, rare Indian paintings on glass, a recamier sofa covered in pink striped fabric — that were, in Radziwill's own words, "bizarre, exotic, and delicious." Sumptuously photographed by Miguel Flores-Vianna, who regularly shoots for AD, World of Interiors, and Vogue, the two hatched the idea to do a book together over lunch a few summers ago. "He came with me to India, and I had him flying all over the place for this book," Fine says. "We respect each other's tastes so much, and working with him was a dream."
