ADVICE FROM THE NEW GUARD BY ANNE LEE PHILLIPS A uthor and textile designer Carl Dellatore tapped into his extensive network from his magazine career to compile his book, Interior Design Master Class: 100 Lessons from America's Finest Designers on the Art of Decoration (Rizzoli). It quickly became essential reading for designers, established and aspiring alike. His new book is sure to have a place in the design literary canon as well. In On Style: Inspiration and Advice from the New Generation of Interior Design (Rizzoli), Dellatore profiles 50 designers who represent today's top emerging talent, from members of distinguished firms such as Cullman & Kravis, McMillen Inc., David Kleinberg Design Associates, and Drake/ Anderson to protégés of Bunny Williams and Miles Redd. Each profile highlights a previously unpublished project, career path, background, and advice from designers including Nick Olsen, David Kaihoi, Sarah Bartholomew, Lilly Bunn, Catherine Olasky and Maximilian Sinsteden, Lance Scott, Caleb Anderson, Oliver Furth, and more. Excerpts from our chat with Carl Dellatore. Bedside reading. I'm finishing another book, Garden Design Master Class, so I'm immersed in reading about garden design. I'm in the middle of Capability Brown: Designing the English Landscape, which I highly recommend; the photography [by Joe Cornish] is breathtaking. Recent acquisition. My partner, Todd, and I just purchased a new Toyota Tundra. Beautiful truck — and as Todd can't pass a yard sale without making a purchase, it's handy! Profession in another life. Honestly, anything to do with food. On the design-industry horizon. It's so hard to tell where design is headed. With the rapid expansion of visual information that came with the advent of the Internet, so much has changed. One thing I do expect: a move toward simplicity. People are looking for the antidote to the frenetics of the 21st century. Favorite advice from the book. Neal Beckstedt talked about not worrying if the things you buy will work well together. His advice is that if you like something, trust yourself and buy it. Inspiring trip. The last trip I took was to Mexico City, which I loved. Friends had told me that the food culture was marvelous, which turned out to be an understatement. From remarkable street stalls at lunch to high- styled dining rooms like Rosetta (highly recommend!), the food in Mexico City was first rate — on par with living in New York. Back in the textile biz. I'm going back to my original love of designing textiles, along with working on books with Rizzoli. More on that at the first of next year. Carl Dellatore will be in Dallas as part of Texas Design Week, Thursday, October 10, 12:30 pm, at Arteriors showroom, for a panel discussion (Dellatore moderates) with Caleb Anderson, Lance Scott, and Oliver Furth, whose projects appear in the book; book signing to follow.
