SOUTHERN COMFORT THE WORK OF LEE LEDBETTER BY ANNE LEE PHILLIPS L ee Ledbetter turns t h e n o t i o n t h a t architects can't be interior designers on its head with his chic combination of traditional and modernism, as illustrated in his book The Art of Place: Lee Ledbetter — Architecture and Interiors (Rizzoli); his mastery of both serious architecture and the decorative arts is wildly apparent. Based in New Orleans, Ledbetter has a degree in architecture from Princeton and is published prolifically in design magazines. In his book are 16 stunning projects, but it's his work in New Orleans that resonates, with its historic reverence, gentility, and American appropriateness. His own modernist home in New Orleans, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a standout. Ledbetter will be in Dallas for Texas Design Week, and having recently published his monograph, he's wise counsel on the panel, "Art of the Book Deal — From Design Project to Book," where he sits with legendary NY photographer Pieter Estersohn; his Rizzoli editor, Sandy Gilbert; and designer Cathy Kincaid, whose first book is out this month. The panel, moderated by Chesie Breen, will be held at Made Goods showroom Friday, October 11, 6:30 pm. Bedside reading. Currently, How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan. Recent purchases. A painting by Stephen Bron Gurtowski, a figurative painter recently shown at Albert Merola Gallery in Provincetown, MA. Collections. Contemporary painting, photography, ceramics, and vintage silver. Profession in another life. Painter. On the design industry horizon. Sustainability. Hopefully this will also mean a return to collecting antiques. Fellow architects/designers you admire. Architects Deborah Berke, Steven Harris, Thomas Phifer. Designers Jamie Bush, William T. Georgis, Thomas Jayne. Recent inspiring trip. Lopud, Croatia. Texas Design Week Dallas is a ticketed event; for tickets and complete schedule go to texasdesignweek.com.
