PERFUME ROYALTY GONE BANANAS M artinique Celebration — a g e n i u s n e w collaboration between CW Stockwell and Voutsa — puts a wild and colorful spin on a classic design. The Martinique banana-leaf pattern, created in 1942 by CW Stockwell, famously graced the walls of the Beverly Hills Hotel during the mid-20th century and still appears in some of the hotel's main spaces. The original green hue has been vibrantly reinterpreted by design studio Voutsa, founded by artist George Venson. Using the original Martinique footprint, Vinson created original paintings that pay homage to celebrated artists including Henri Matisse and David Hockney. Venson's creations are hand-printed by artisans at CW Stockwell on Belgian linen fabric and vellum wallpaper. Venson, a native of San Antonio who attended Rice University in Houston, first captured the attention of design tastemakers with irreverent wallpapers featuring lips, snakes, octopi, and trees adorned with genitalia. And Venson's insanely patterned and colored wallpapers for Sasha Bikoff's stairway installation at the 2018 Kips Bay Decorator Show House still have the design world buzzing. Fans of the fragrance house will find the elegant shop nodding to the contemporary with sleek brass trim, brilliant porcelain finishes, and an abstract painting by sixth-generation master perfumer Olivier Creed. Exclusive to the new boutique are Millesime 1849, Angelique Encens, Rose Imperiale, and 1000ml flacons of select scents. The full range of Creed fragrances — including the beloved Aventus, Green Irish Tweed, Millesime Imperial, and Love in White — are stocked. The first Creed fragrance was a bottle of Royal English Leather commissioned in 1781 by King George III after he became enamored of a pair of scented gloves created by James Creed. Patrons through the centuries have included Queen Victoria; Princess Grace, for whose wedding the popular Fleurissimo was created; George Clooney; and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Shelby Hodge F ans are celebrating the first brick-and-mortar location of Frances Valentine in Texas, opening this month — a charming boutique in River Oaks District. The bright preppy label was founded in 2016 by the late Kate Spade, along with her husband, Andy Spade, and her best friend Elyce Arons, 10 years after the Spades sold their last remaining shares of Kate Spade to Neiman Marcus Group. Frances Valentine, a combination of family names and one of her middle names, echoes the timeless aesthetic of Spade's original label, with ladylike handbags, caftans, twin seats, dresses, pajamas, sandals, Mary Janes, loafers, bucket hats, and jewelry, as well as a selection of Oaxacan-stitched cocktail napkins, embroidered table linens and other home items. New York designer Steven Sclaroff created the 1,200-square-foot store, propping the space with vintage furnishings and bold art.
