ON OUR RADAR If you're headed to Dallas for the opening of Kips Bay Decorator Show House (September 23 – October 24) and Texas Design Week Dallas (September 20 – 24), and you should be, then take note of these important new design destinations — all are exclusive to Dallas in Texas. EN GARDE! The L.A. champion of design, Garde, brings its cutting-edge authority to Texas with a stunning new retail store inside a converted warehouse near the Dallas Design District. Co- owners Scotti Sitz and husband John Davidson have brought a chic stable of international designers to the space, with avant garde furniture, lighting, tabletop, and jewelry. Look for works by a vanguard of Belgians such as In his hands, a heavy marble tabletop is honed so impossibly thin as to appear weightless. There's also London designer Faye Toogood's celebrated collection of resin Roly Poly tables and chairs, along with lighting by New York's Apparatus Studio, both longtime Garde mainstays. Italy's Giopato & Coombes produces contemporary Venetian glass lighting, and from France, experimental designer P a u l i n e E s p a r o n h a s developed her own techniques to rework materials such as oil, wood, berries, leaves, and roots into useable products, including perfumes, tables, and rugs. Edward Collinson's sophisticated kitchen island — on display at Garde — was handcrafted in his London studio. Garde is also making a big push to CarmWorks, designer Camilo Andres Rodriguez Márquez creates masterpieces of contemporary design via traditional techniques from Colombia and beyond. SAMUEL & SONS Two venerated family-run design brands — Samuel & Sons and Romo — have opened showrooms side-by-side in the Dallas Design Center, sharing a 6,300-square-foot space with soaring 18-foot ceilings. Long considered among the most coveted passementerie in the world and beloved by designers, Samuel & Sons has opened a 2,000-square- foot flagship showroom in the Dallas Design Center — the brand's only dedicated showroom in Texas. The 75-year-old family-run company produces trims fashioned into tassels, braid, gimp, fringes, and cords in wool, silk, linen, crystal, glass, seashells, metal, and wood. With a design archive of more than 10,000 trims, Samuel & Sons is known for its semi-custom and custom collaboration, and has also teamed with designers Lori Weitzner, whose collections include cultured pearls and precious gems; designer Michael S. Smith, who decorated the Obama White House; Timothy Corrigan; and Laura Kirar. To the trade. Samuel & Sons, 1250 Slocum St., samuelandsons.com. ROMO Founded in England 1902, Romo is a family-run fabric and wallcovering business in its fifth generation. The bring in new designers to Dallas from Latin American countries, including installation artist and furniture maker Brian Thoreen. Based in Mexico City and L.A. At his Bogotá, Colombia, furniture studio Vincent Van Duysen and Michael Verheyden, celebrated designers whose minimalist serving ware and objects have been featured at Garde in L.A. since its inception in 2012. Also, look for objects this fall from Ben Storms, who designs and makes furniture and sculpture out of his studio in Brussels.
