(Continued) (Continued from page 100) M ario Buatta: Anatomy of a Decorator at Kravet. In an illustrated talk, Mario Buatta (Rizzoli) author Emily Evans Eerdmans delved into the late designer's vast archives, which included more than 80 scrapbooks chronicling his career, followed by a book signing at Kravet Showroom. A confidante of Mario Buatta, she oversaw the dispersal of Buatta's estate for the blockbuster auction at Sotheby's. Seen: Kravet's Kelly Von Pond, Bill Stubbs, Alex Killion, Kara Childress, Courtnay Tartt Elias, Trish Allen, Mary McDonald, Jean Jones, Stacy Ellington, Rasha Nasreddin, Magen Pastor, Meredith Grover, Angela Fabbri, Pamela O'Brien, Sophia Vassiliou, and Katie Brandt. Anne Lee Phillips Mario Buatta Takeaway: • A room should never look like it was done at one time. Buatta was always careful to make sure a room looked layered and collected. • Lee Jofa Floral Bouquet was Buatta's favorite toile. • Invest in good curtains the first time around. Buatta moved his own curtains to several different apartments and added length to them as needed. • Add moldings, trim, and any extra architectural details before touching the interiors. But you can compensate for a lack of good architecture with dramatic curtains. • Buatta wanted his clients to look gorgeous in their homes, so he would do apple-green bedrooms for blonde clients and lilac for brunettes. Fashion & Design. A conversation with London designer Giles Deacon and Claire Vallis, design director of Sanderson Design Group, celebrated the new fabric and wallpaper collaboration. Deacon, a British couture designer and illustrator known for his expertly crafted garments, is the recipient of British Fashion Designer of the Year, and his works are in the permanent collections of the V&A Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The talk was followed by a preview of the collection at Culp Associates. Seen: Sanderson's Beth Holman; Culp Associates' Karen Rogers-Still, Cammie Mars, and Todd Moody; as well as Charles Weiss, Courtney Blair, Nancy Bihlmaier, Lindsay Robinson, Krystal Finch, Sheila Tanner, Courtnay Tartt Elias, Jean Jones, Stacy Ellington, Daphne Laplante, Linley Stroud, Emily McMillen, Mary Ytterberg, Caroline Coulson, Tessa Van Alstine, Tracy Motley, and Alli Ryan Winter. Anne Lee Phillips Giles Deacon Takeaway: • The element of the handmade was essential to Deacon in this collaboration. Every element has been redrawn by hand, which results in nuances and a slight sense of movement. • At Sanderson, only one craftsman printer can block-print a particular order to keep it consistent. The craftsman has his own weight and pressure he applies to the block-print so it needs to be consistent through the colors. • Elements of British decorating: layered, eccentric, playfulness combined with precise quality and craftsmanship, depth, and a dash of humor. Kathryn Ireland at James. From the moment she set foot onstage, Kathryn Ireland was in high gear. "We need more decorating here!" the British-born designer announced as she draped patterned fabric samples on the sofa before taking her seat for a conversation with James showroom co-owner Hunter Ellis. Just off a plane from California, Ireland delivered an illustrated talk and signed her book at James showroom, where the Kathryn Ireland textile collection was on full show. Seen: James showroom's Craig O'Dell, Avery Bowers, Bo Barkley, Ashton Taylor Oberhauser, Pam Pierce, Megan Megas, Brooke Stuckey, Ruth Davis, Morgan Viers, Garrett DeLano, Bryson White, Greg Fourticq and John Cone, Jennifer Greer Hartmann, Dan Houchard, Catherine Olasky, Meredith Ueckert, Shana Jacobs, Jennifer Meeks, and Margot Stevens.
