design of the public, members-only, and private interior spaces of the hotel, where it will appear in hand-finished millwork and flooring that emphasize the architectural lines, lend a sense of timeless history to this new building, and highlight the raw beauty of this exceptional natural material. These oaks set the tone for the honesty of materiality that we will use to form layers of rich, textural atmosphere throughout the hotel: limestone fountains, lime-washed brick walls, terracotta floors, this incredibly veined stone that you will find in the bars, lobby, and bathrooms. Requiring little to no intervention, we believe in honoring the rarity of these materials with heritage techniques and the high craft of the handmade. For example, the terracotta tiles are hand-laid in a graphic rug-like pattern in the entryway, speaking to an American tradition of brick rugs. And the light available in the space was something worth celebrating — we amplified it with reflective finishes on plaster walls and transom windows that give more transparency to the structure. Conversation, connection and inspiration. RS and SA: Within the members-only spaces — which include a cafe, walled garden, and living room — is a grand double-height library that recalls historic European homes of collectors and intellectuals. We see this as a hub for conversation and inspiration, the way great libraries have been used throughout history. In the public restaurant, a hand-painted mural framing the open kitchen echoes the wooded view through the restaurant's windows. In the guest rooms, doorways are trimmed with oak millwork for the kind of warmth that only wood can provide. And lighting throughout the hotel will be custom and speak to a spectrum of materials (brass, paper, wood) and design histories (Japanese lanterns, Arts and Crafts chandeliers, Machine Age metalwork).
