PORTRAIT HUNT SLONEM I love back-to-craftsmen, handmade and artisan qualities in food, products and home construction as much as the next guy … we further this in the pages of the magazine. But I'm starting to chuckle at the lengths to which some restaurants (or overzealous public relations people) are going in the verbiage for menus and press releases. Some recent hand-typed items that have come across my hand-mussed desk: hand-tossed salads, hand-tended coffee beans, hand-thrown pizza, hand-picked lettuces, hand-gardened vegetables, hand-plated cheeses … How else would one garden vegetables? And I would love to see the machine that could plate cheeses in a restaurant. Then there's handbottled water. Does it really make any difference if the water is hand-poured into the bottle or if a machine does it? But, on to our handcrafted fall lineup: Hermès' Festival des Métiers, Wednesday through Sunday, October 10 through 14), is located in a stunningly designed tent next to the Hermès boutique — Houston is only one of three U.S. cities to get this exhibition of Hermès craftsmen flown in from France, showcasing their skills (see page 14). Artist Laurie Simmons is honored at the Aurora Picture Show Award Dinner Tuesday, October 16, chaired by Leigh Smith and Allison Ayers; Saks Fifth Avenue's festive Key to the Cure Kickoff benefitting CancerForward is Wednesday, October 17; Texas Contemporary Art Fair hits Houston Thursday, October 18 through 21 with nearly 70 galleries from Houston, around the US and internationally (page 33); Catwalk for a Cure honoring Alex Knight — chaired by Kelli Blanton, Jennie Segal and Laura Arnold, with a fashion show by Yigal Azrouël and Saks Fifth Avenue — is Thursday, November 1, and there are loads of great book signings and designer appearances (Kelly Klein and Miles Redd, among others; see page 68 for dates and locations). All in all, a fantastic hand-curated fall. The 2012 Flash Forward Mover honoree is actress Tracy Nelson, a three-time cancer survivor; other honorees are Houston civic leaders and cancer survivors.
