VALLEY of the Dolls Laurie Simmons' The Love Doll/ Day 25 (The Jump), 2010 Not since Tony Oursler and William Wegman was honored at the early Aurora Picture Show Awards Dinner in 2001 and 2002 have we been so excited about an APS honoree's personal appearance. This month, we've saved the date and secured a seat for the ultimate evening for the celebrated mistress of dolls and dollhouses, Laurie Simmons. Miz Simmons will be fêted at this swell cocktail and dinner party, then presented with an award by Texas artist/former Core Fellow Gabriel Martinez while her contributions to cinema are screened. Gallerist Allison Ayers and collectress Leigh Smith chair this not-to-be-missed night — limited to just 80 guests — with PaperCity as media sponsor. We know one thing for sure: Everyone will be very dolled up. 12th Annual Aurora Picture Show Award Dinner, Tuesday, October 16, 6:30 pm; Aurora Picture Show, 2442 Bartlett St., 713.868.2101; tickets from $350; contact Rachel Blackney Tepper, blackney@ aurorapictureshow.org. Catherine D. Anspon Op on the BLOCK Just in: The recently rebranded Morton Auctioneers & Appraisers — partner Tricia Kuehnert-Gillespy has retired, hence "Kuehnert" is no longer in the auction house's moniker — is in full swing on its season, continuing Morton's emphasis on modern and contemporary art. Top lots that caught our eye for the upcoming October 25 sale: a specifically commissioned 3-D Alexander Calder's Spirale et Papillons, 1975, at Morton Auctioneers & Appraisers work on paper from the late 80's by wild op art master Yaacov Agam, whose career has undergone a resurgence as a pioneering provocateur of geometric abstraction. Never offered to the market before, the Agam joins a jaunty Alexander Calder work on paper of psychedelic butterflies from 1975, sumptuous Boulle furniture and even a vintage Rolls-Royce on the block. Gentlemen and ladies, prepare your paddles. Fine Art & Antiques Auction, Thursday, October 25, 7 pm; Morton Auctioneers & Appraisers, 4901 Richmond Ave., 713.827.7835; mortonkuehnert.com. Catherine D. Anspon Stephen Rolfe Powell's Sultry Cleavage Jones, 2010, at Hooks-Epstein Galleries, Inc. Prolific neo-expressionistic painter of flora and fauna extraordinaire (plus a few telling portraits) Hunt Slonem returns to Houston this month for an eagerly awaited exhibition. Slonem's style and talent have been celebrated by two major volumes, countless exhibitions, TV segments and representation in more than 100 museums. On Wednesday, October 11, he unfurls a new suite of canvases while making his Gremillion & Co. Fine Art debut. With his inimitable personality and rapid-fire talent, this dandy of the contemporary art world promises to set the town abuzz with his birds, bunnies, butterflies and a new series based upon hypnotic monkey eyes. We're intrigued. Opening Thursday, October 11, 6 to 8 pm (through November 11), at Gremillion & Co. Fine Art, 2501 Sunset, 713.522.2701; gremillion.com. Catherine D. Anspon Design Buzz Hien Lam Home at 2032 West Alabama is doing a bit of rebranding and will now be called Lam Bespoke, a nod to their emphasis on creating custom upholstered furnishings. Lam Bespoke is also the sole dealer in Houston for Mitchell Gold Bob Williams furnishings. On Thursday, October 11, Leslie Sinclair will sign her book Segreto: Secrets to Finishing Beautiful Interiors from 11 am to 3 pm. Pavilion W JENNY ANTILL ith every new and exciting retail development, change is inevitable. In the case of David Taylor and his mom, Mona Dees — owners of the much-loved, recently shuttered Antiques & Interiors on Dunlavy — change was a very 19th-century relic at House 849 booth at Antiques & Interiors at the Pavilion fortuitous opportunity. Vacating their Dunlavy locale, the duo has settled into a new home in the former Antique Pavilion. Renamed Antiques & Interiors at the Pavilion, they've nearly doubled in size. In addition to bringing 31 of their antique, art and design proprietors with them (including Faded Rose Antiques and Mary Daly of The Fabulous Flea), they've multiplied their dealer count to a whopping 80 within 25,000 square feet of glorious floor space. Several esteemed residents of the former establishment — including Crow & Co., David Lackey Antiques & Art and Pillsbury-Michel, Past Era Antique Jewelry — continue to have booths, while Taylor and Dees have attracted those who ply in the interiors trade, too — but not to the exclusion of the collectors who, with a rabid passion for quality art, antiques and jewels, wander in to discover their next covetable find. Here you'll find design minds such as Amelia Handegan from Charleston and Houston designer Dennis McNabb stocking furniture, accessories, objets and art, as well as collector Melody Rodgers (known for her cool costume jewels), faux painter Sheema Muneer, designer Nina Wickman at WW Design, Madeleine McDermott Hamm, Merilee Cunningham, Dana Aichler, Larry Bahn/ The Country Gentleman, Holly Cauble and art dealers Robert Alker and Burt Melnick — just a few of the boldfaced names that round out the tempting offerings. 2311 Westheimer Road, Fabulous Flea booth at Antiques 713.520.9755; antique-pavilion.com.
