26 OBSESSIONS. DECORATIONS. SALIENT FACTS. R o b e r t a n d C o r t n e y Novogratz have a knack for turning derelict prop- erties into stunning spaces. The dashing couple and their seven children have their own re- ality show on HGTV, Home by Novogratz, and the ren- ovations of their quirky houses — the latest is a ram- bling, 1920s estate in the Hollywood Hills called "The Castle" — have been chronicled in their books. Their design f i r m , T h e Novogratz, has reimag- ined houses and hotels f r o m N e w York to New Orleans and Napa Valley. Everything the Novogratzes get their hands on becomes a little more hip, artistic, and loads more fun. Their new book, Beachside Bohemian: Easy Living by the Sea (Rizzoli, $55), docu- ments their vacation home in Trancoso, Brazil, which they've made over to stun- ning effect. Part interior design book, part travel guide, it treats us to a room-by-room tour of the house, succinct design and travel tips, and bits on the charming local shops, restaurants, artisans, and nightlife found in the Quadrado, the central hub. The Novogratzes, who write lovingly and enthusiastically about their seaside vil- lage and its people, are clearly smitten. Meet Cortney and Robert Novogratz Thursday, November 17, 6 to 8 pm, at a reception and book sign- ing at The Shade Store, 4516 McKinney Ave., 469.619.4942; RSVP to rsvp@theshadestore.com, with Dallas in the subject line. F elicitous Felines: Travel through time at the Dallas Museum of Art when two of the most popular topics — cats and the pharaohs — converge, with an art his- torical twist, as well as loans from the esteemed Egyptian holdings of the Brooklyn Museum. "Divine Felines: Cats of Ancient Egypt" features more than 80 objects, particularly luxury goods and sculpture, bearing the likeness of wild and domestic cats, including sphinxes. Also explored are cat burial practices within the grand pharaonic tombs and the Egyptians' conflation of cats with sun gods (through January 8). Taking a Hard Line: Painter Aaron Parazette solos at Talley Dunn Gallery. The University of Houston art professor and former Core Fellow at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is remem- bered for his long, long site-specific mural at the Dallas Contemporary in 2011. Now Parazette unveils his latest and greatest clean-lined abstraction: crisp, shaped canvases informed by an unexpected palette and the punch of graphic elements, all crafted using a hard-edged taping method he has perfected (November 12 – December 17).
