30 TRIBUTES, HONORS + POWERHOUSE ART DEFINED RE:DEFINE M ore emotional was the speech delivered by Johnson Hartig, the creative mind behind fash- ion brand Libertine. Hartig, with tears in his eyes, remembered the difficulties he experienced growing up as a creative child. He credited MTV for the source of inspi- ration and escapism it provided to an entire gen- eration of music and fashion lovers daydreaming through the power of music videos. Many sparkled in Hartig's Libertine creations, including this year's event chair, PaperCity editor at large Maxine Trowbridge, along with Joyce Goss and Kenny Goss. All sported colorful camouflage and sequin numbers, setting the stage for the fun '80s-glam- themed after-party, during which Hartig took to the console table, spinning records with model-DJ Chandra North under a huge mirrored disco ball. The star auction-lot of the evening was surely Damien Hirst's spin painting featuring George Michael's portrait — a favorite selfies backdrop! — which sold for a whopping $580,000 to an anonymous telephone bidder. (I like to think it might have been Sir Elton on the line, celebrating his 70th birthday that very weekend.) Georgina Hartland, in a Michael Faircloth dress embroi- dered with sequinned stars, was once again excep- tionally generous, sitting next to British artist Marc Quinn. She snagged his red thumbprint-shaped work for $300,000. Peggy and Dave Matthews, longtime friends of George and Kenny, came from Houston, and took home the Ross Bleckner paint- ing auctioned live by Christie's America president Brook Hazelton, while others in the room fought on the Paddle8 app for more art goodies. Nancy Rogers, who sponsored the entertain- ment provided by the legendary Chaka Khan, looked fabulous in a long coat by Libertine, as did Jessica Nowitzki, who paired one of Libertine's short embroidered capes with a Rosie Assoulin pant. I myself did not look too shabby in my new Etro jacket, although I was green with envy for Brian Bolke's Dolce & Gabbana leopard-print trousers. Dear Brian, I need to borrow those for the next big Dallas party!
