124 A WHITE NIGHT WINEDALE CATHERINE D. ANSPON BUSTS OUT THE SUMMER WHITES. PHOTOGRAPHY SUNNIE RAY. E very few years, Friends of Winedale hosts a late summer bash where guests don their summer whites, clink cocktails under Henkel Square's magnificent oaks, break bread in Henkel Hall, bid on live and silent auctions and dance the night away. The latest fund-raiser was titled Sommerabend Fest, a reference to Winedale's collection of 19th-century German immigrant homes and the accompanying furniture, textiles, and tools of the era, all acquired by Bayou Bend benefactress Miss Ima Hogg in the early 1960s and later gifted to UT's Briscoe Center for American History. Adding a groovy '60s vibe was Beatles tribute band The Eggmen, which allied with the night's theme, "With a Little Help from Our Friends." Cinda and Armando Palacios catered, and their chef, Gino Llanes, crafted a menu of Tex-Mex and Italian hits from the restaurateurs' recently unveiled Mandito's and Lulu's in Round Top. This was the second triennial soirée, and yielded $178,000 for Winedale's preservation and upkeep. The night in the country — a favorite of Round Top residents — was co-chaired by the power trio of Martha Turner Sotheby's Linda Plant, board prez of the Friends of Winedale, and board members Jim Wagner and Ginny Elverson Welch, and honorary chairs Beverly and Tommy Jacomini.
