SALIENT FACTS. 20 T he entry site is open for the 2019 PaperCity Design Awards, which recognizes outstanding interior design; interior architecture; retail, restaurant, and gallery design; landscape design; historical preservation; and furniture, product, and textile design, along with other categories. The entry period closes Wednesday, March 6. The awards ceremony to announce the winning entries is Monday, March 25, at The Post Oak Hotel, 6:30 pm. Winning entries will be published in the October 2019 PaperCity Decoration + Art issue, circulation 60,000. Confirmed judges are designers Bunny Williams, and Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson of Drake/ A new 20-story mid- rise is headed to We s t h e i m e r. D e v e l o p e r Randall Davis has submitted a variance request for an upcoming project at 3723 Westheimer, formerly Krispen Home. Davis plans for a classic architectural style, with 50 to 55 units. The frontages that face Eastgrove and Westheimer will have a glass first floor, and there are plans for an art wall in the lobby … Back Row Home has added 3,200 square feet of retail space — the emporium is now a prodigious 15,000 square feet of antiques, furniture, bedding, rugs, accessories, and gifts. Owners Leighton Hale, Kelly O'Donnell, and Tracey Shingledecker have stocked up on more marquee names: Lee Industries furniture, Loloi rugs, and Bella Notte linens … Designer Don Connelly has sold his chic home furnishings and accessories shop Area to his longtime colleague, store buyer and manager Daniel Cuellar. They've been working through the details of the sale on the down-low for more than a year. Cuellar describes Area as "a collection of things we love. We don't subscribe to a specific notion or trend; we just purchase items that resonate with us." The 5,000 square foot store has an ever- changing inventory of antique and vintage furnishings and accessories, along with products culled from s m a l l i n d e p e n d e n t d e s i g n e r s . The PaperCity Design Awards kicks off Texas Design Week Houston, Monday through Friday, March 25 though March 29 — a week- long celebration of design with panel discussions, salon talks, book signings, and cocktails with some of the most recognized names in the design business. Restaurant BUZZ Adair Concepts (Eloise Nichols, Adair Kitchen, Bebidas, Betsy's at Evelyn's Park, Skeeter's), proprietor of Tex-Mex restaurant Los Tios, is set to open a new location in Tanglewood in early spring. The new outpost takes over the former Ciao Bello space at 5161 San Felipe. Expect Los Tios favorites such as mesquite- grilled fajitas, tacos, and enchiladas, and those famous puffy shells slathered in chile con queso … Houston's iconic Tex-Mex eatery The Original Ninfa's on Navigation is opening The Original Ninfa's Uptown Houston in the shuttered Pesca Seafood Culture space. Austin firm Michael Hsu Office of Architecture is revamping the 1700 Post Oak location. Chef Jason Gould helms the kitchen; his culinary résumé includes an executive chef role at Montrose's Gravitas and a seven- year run as corporate executive chef of Cyclone Anaya's Mexican Kitchen … Thirty-seven-year-old Houston restaurant Carmelo's Cucina Italiana will be reborn in late spring, with a horseshoe-shaped bar and expansive patio. Restaurateur and meat maestro Benjamin Berg (B&B Butchers, B.B. Lemon) bought Carmelo's several months back and is spearheading the revamp at 14795 Memorial. His brother, Daniel Berg (former chef tournant at Le Bernardin and Daniel, both three- star Michelin restaurants), serves as executive chef… Borgo Food Station is transforming from delicious European takeout to a full-service restaurant, Mina Ristorante, opening in April. Owners, husband and wife team Monica Fallone and Luis Mancera, will continue with a menu of fresh, traditional Italian comfort food with an added wine list … Perry's Steakhouse & Grille has made its way inside the loop, opening last month in River Oaks Shopping Center at 1997 West Gray. Owner Chris Perry serves up crowd favorites such as Filet Perry wrapped in Nueske's applewood bacon and surf-and-turf pasta … And this from Shelby Hodge: Renowned Beverly Hills chef/restaurateur and darling of the Oscars after-party Wolfgang Puck has thrown down the gauntlet in Houston, opening his 12th catering division here. We're dreaming of caviar parfait dusted with 24K gold, edamame and black truffle potstickers, and perhaps Wagyu sliders — some of which were on Puck's menu for the 2018 Oscars Governor's Ball.
