68 ART + DECORATION Just how black can black be. Artist Anish Kapoor owns the rights to Vantablack, a black so black that it absorbs 99.96 percent of all light that hits it — the blackest black in the world. Black-hole black. Kapoor didn't invent it, but he did purchase the rights to it, and nobody can use it but him. Rival British artist Stuart Semple, a bit outraged that Kapoor is so elitist that he keeps his black for himself, developed Black 2.0, the mattest, flattest, blackest black, presumably blacker than Kapoor's black, and anyone can buy it … except for Kapoor. On Semple's online store, you must agree to this — and this is verbatim: "Note: By adding this product to your cart you confirm that you are not Anish Kapoor, you are in no way affiliated to Anish Kapoor, you are not purchasing this item on behalf of Anish Kapoor or an associate of Anish Kapoor."
