ART + DECORATION 72 A t a majestic height of 10 feet, Argentine artist Miguel Ángel Ríos' portrait of the Queen of Spain from the Age of Exploration is the hallmark piece of his solo exhibition now on view at Sicardi Ayers Bacino. Created from slicing, shredding, and reconfiguring Cibachrome photographs appropriated from colonial-area European maps, the towering royal in Eminencia (Eminence) recalls 16th-century representations of the Virgin Mary circa the discovery of the Americas. This monarch's body, arms, and dress bear text listing the countries of Europe, while the surrounding ocean is a roll call of indigenous languages, mostly lost, and colonized towns in Latin America. The result is a modern meditation on displaced people and the refugee crisis. Rios' regal empress — a museum-worthy work priced in the low six figures — is even more timely today than when it was created in the '90s, in the decade when the 500th anniversary of Columbus' voyage was celebrated.
