A look behind- the-scenes at one gallerist who is pack- ing for the Fair. Betty Moody weighs in. Moody Gallery's first art fair. The Chicago International Art Exposition at the Navy Pier in 1982. Today we all know about Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach and the hundreds of art fairs that occur throughout the world, but in the '80s and most of the '90s there were basically three art fairs in the world, and two were important: Art Basel in Switzerland and Chicago. Why exhibit at the Texas Contemporary. Because of the staff at Art Market, the collec- tors, curators, art con- sultants that attend, the participating art galleries — many are dear friends –— and it's just a fun fair for me and my staff. I love the layout of the Fair this year, and my space, and the artwork we are taking with us. It's going to be an outstand- ing event! The new James Drake ( m o n u m e n t a l ) drawing and the n e w M e l i s s a Miller became the key pieces from which we built the rest of the ex- hibition. Then, of course, other new work came to the gallery, which was appropriate for the fair. For us, the art- work determines the layout of the booth. I view the selection and installation as if I'm putting together a group show in my own gallery. The entry period concludes Wednesday, October 12, 2016. On Thursday, November 3, winning entries will be announced and celebrated at a by-invitation awards ceremony at Dallas Design District. Winning entries will also be featured in the January 2017 PaperCity Home + Art issue. We are pleased to announce our panel of judges: Architect Bobby McAlpine, McAlpine Architects, with offices throughout the South and NYC; designer Jeffrey Alan Marks, based in L.A. and Santa Monica; and designer Jay Jeffers, based in San Francisco. Bobby McAlpine, the quintessential Southern architect and a member of the Architectural Digest AD 100 list, holds both architecture and interior design degrees and has crafted a timeless and poetic style of architecture, with offices in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and New York. McAlpine is the author of the best-selling book The Home Within Us (Rizzoli) and co-author with designer Susan Ferrier of The Art of the House (Rizzoli). McAlpine's work has been published in The New York Times, Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, and House & Garden, and his furniture collections are through Lee Industries, McRae Designs, and Elegant Earth. California designer Jeffrey Alan Marks may be known for his star role on Bravo's Million Dollar Decorators, but his inclusion in House Beautiful's list of the most influential decorators in American history and Elle Decor's A-List demonstrates his design clout. His collaborations include collections with Kravet, Palecek, and A. Rudin, with a bedding collection debuting this year. His book, The Meaning of Home (Rizzoli), chronicles 15 of his firms' projects, from a Malibu beach house to a London townhouse. San Francisco designer Jay Jeffers, a member of the Elle Decor A-List, has a home accessories collection for Arteriors, with an expanded collection of furniture, accessories, and lighting debuting this year. His work has been published in House Beautiful, Elle Decor, Departures, The New York Times, and Los Angeles Times, and he is the author of Collected Cool (Rizzoli). papercitymag.com/designawards.
