VOGUE RUNWAY F ew scents are more recognizable than Chanel No. 5. The fragrance, which Gabrielle Coco Chanel and business partner Ernest Beaux debuted in 1921, is the unofficial olfactory symbol of wealth, privilege, and old-money chic. This month, in an unprecedented d e b u t , O l i v i e r P o l g e , who was named Chanel's official fragrance creator in early 2015, modernized No. 5 with notes of Mayrose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, vetiver, cedar, and musk to create No. 5 L'Eau. Christina Geyer Chanel No. 5 L'Eau W hen word broke that Texas-born de- signer Brandon Maxwell was coming to town for a trunk show at Neiman Mar- cus Downtown this month, our initial thoughts were about First Lady Michelle Obama. A well-known fan of Maxwell's, she wore a stunning custom gown of his design for a White House State Dinner in August. But after the Spring 2017 collections were presented at New York Fashion Week last month, the news of Maxwell's Dallas debut became all the more major. At the legendary Russian Tea Room, supermodel Naomi Campbell and pop star Lady Gaga sat front row. And the reviews were stellar. For the stylist turned designer, who is self-taught and who self-funded and launched his com- pany just a year ago, the recent success is ovation-worthy. No doubt his home state will warmly welcome him — and his megawatt Spring 2017 collection.
