From that moment, I knew how special she was. She shined a light that could not be ignored, larger than life but sweet as the day is long. — John Terlingo, owner, Terlingo Cycle ANGELS FARRAH'S I MET A red one-piece swimsuit, a radiant smile, and bountiful blonde curls conjure but one image: Farrah Fawcett and the famous pinup poster that made the Charlie's Angel a '70s icon. At John Terlingo's Oak Lawn cycling studio, Terlingo Cycle, you can buy T-shirts emblazoned with that iconic image. The reason for the tees is philanthropic — and deeply personal. Each shirt sold benefits the Farrah Fawcett Foundation. Terlingo, who is from Texas but was a spin instructor in L.A. for 10 years, coached many celebrities, including Fawcett. After her death in 2009 from cancer, Terlingo — who had idolized her since childhood — con- tributed to her namesake foundation and began working with Alana Stewart (former wife of rocker Rod Stewart), Fawcett's best friend and the nonprofi t's president. In honor of Fawcett, Terlingo teamed with Dallas friends and powerhouse fund- raisers Claire Emanuelson, Muffi n Lemak, Shelby Wagner, and Chuck Steelman to raise $100,000 for the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge Dallas, scheduled to break ground in 2017 near Baylor Hospital and serve as a home away from home for patients seeking cancer treatment who reside outside of North Texas. "John has raised money for the foundation in the past," said Stewart, "so when he fi rst approached us, it seemed like a perfect partnership." Donors and guests celebrated the success of the capi- tal campaign at a private Forever Farrah dinner, catered by The Joule, and hosted at the contemporary-art-fi lled home of Nancy and Clint Carlson. The invita- tion drew a top-notch guest list, including '70s television celebrities Fred Willard, Andrew Stevens, Morgan Fairchild, and Christine Romeo; the Foundation's execu- tive director, Fawcett's nephew Greg Walls, and wife Nikki, both from Houston; and Deidre Bacala, campaign director of Dallas for the American Cancer Society. "Every time Farrah and I were in Texas, we would go on a search for the best Tex-Mex," says Alana Stewart. "I just hosted a Tex-Mex Fiesta fund-raiser in Los Angeles with Lyle Lovett and all the things Farrah loved: Mexican food and margaritas."
