Only a near-frosty spring night could bring out the pastel furs and pashminas that punctuated the Bayou Bend Garden Party tableau, which is usually a vision of ephem- eral frocks. Nonetheless, there was a warm reception for honoree Johnny Steele, the landscape architect who has been integral to the Bayou Bend gardens since he first visited 45 years ago. The gardens and elaborate party tent were rich with flowers — quite a dramatic change, as the area was completely underwater during Harvey. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, director Gary Tinterow praised not only the honoree but also Bayou Bend director Bonnie Campbell and chief landscape architect Bart Brechter for their near-miracle of recovery from flood damage. The sublime evening raised a record $773,000, reason enough for chairs Polly and Murry Bowden to hit the dance floor after the spring dinner by City Kitchen.
